I) Dismaland, a theme park created by Banksy

Banksy is a British painter, or more precisely a street art graffiti artist. Like a message to society, he draws graffiti and murals on walls across England. His first works were discovered in Bristol in 1999. One of them was "The Mild Mild West", which depicted a teddy bear throwing bombs at riot police. This work drew a great deal of attention, and he has since become one of the best-known artists in England. Many of his creations, including the "Rat", the "Lover Mobile" and "The Little Girl with the Balloon", have been displayed in exhibition spaces around the world. Banksy did not stop at graffiti.

He also opened his first theme park in 2015, which he named "Dismaland". The name combines two ideas: dismal and Disneyland. It is an amusement park that shows the opposite side of the Disney universe we usually see. Instead of the enchanting scenery found in traditional amusement parks, it presents a chaotic, disorderly yet highly artistic place. Banksy also referred to this chaos by calling the park "the UK’s most disappointing attraction".

Inside, visitors could find a charred replica of a Disney castle, a police vehicle used in Ireland turned into a slide, an upside-down Ferris wheel, and other equally bizarre attractions. Many artworks were also on display, including pieces by Mike Ross, Damien Hirst and Jessica Harrison, as well as Banksy. It is not boring, even if it is a frightening park. Many activities were offered to the public so people could enjoy the experience.

Dismaland was a temporary park. It was designed to be temporary and was therefore open for only a few weeks, from August 22 to September 27, 2015. It was located in Weston-Super-Mare, in the west of England, on a former open-air swimming site.

Dismaland park was a major success. More than 150,000 people travelled from across the country to visit it. At the end of its life, Banksy donated most of the materials used to build the park to refugees.

II) Dismaland’s iconic artworks

Many artworks were exhibited at Dismaland throughout this event, as mentioned earlier. Here are some of the most iconic examples:

First, " Fairy Tale Turns Horror " This is the story of a princess transformed into a crime scene. Visitors could see a replica, but a charred one, of the Disney castle. Cinderella can be seen, killed in a carriage accident.

The "Big Rig Jig" is the second. Mike Ross designed this work. It is an assemblage of scrap metal made from two trucks connected by a large pipe.

The police truck is the third. This truck was used in Northern Ireland. Banksy placed it on a small extension and turned it into a slide for children.

Dismaland is more than a fun place. It also aims to raise awareness of current issues. In the middle of the park stands a sculpture representing several migrants in a boat.

A few metres away is a mural depicting David Cameron, the British Prime Minister at the time, enjoying a glass of champagne. To highlight a controversy, this mural was placed among several sheets of rusty steel.

Dismaland park is a leisure centre offering many entertaining activities. Visitors could go duck fishing in a lake of oil. They could also attend a puppet show, which was not intended for children. This show featured many erotic stories, such as "Fifty Shades of Grey". A mini-golf course was also available for sports lovers. This one, however, was decorated with an oil caliphate to give it a more distinctive look.

We could not talk about Dismaland without mentioning Banksy’s iconic graffiti and murals. There were many throughout the park, including one depicting two young boys spying on a naked woman hidden behind a curtain.

III. Why did Banksy create Dismaland?

Dismaland theme park, an impressive and unique art centre, is quite remarkable. It also raises many questions. It raises many questions. What were his sources of inspiration?

We all know that Banksy does not create a work of art by chance. Behind all his creations lies a message, a rebellion, an opinion. Dismaland was designed to deliver messages and make people think. Every work in this park has a particular meaning. The sad characters and the charred castle remind us that life is not a fairy tale. He created a sculpture of the Little Mermaid to illustrate his point. However, the image is distorted so that it appears as if the signal has been lost.

He also wants to show the world that much of our suffering is hidden behind our appearance. This is the image he hopes to convey with the sculpture of Cinderella, damaged in her carriage. This scene recalls the story of Lady Diana, who was killed in a car accident in Paris.

Banksy is also known for being anti-establishment. He was not afraid to criticize all the practices and developments of the modern world during this event. The park was therefore his reflection of society: chaotic and narcissistic, inconsistent. Because we want to move too fast, society is chaotic. It is also narcissistic, because everything is based only on the surface. Today, people care above all about how they look. But there is more to life than appearance. That is what the Disney princesses show. It is also inconsistent. It is inconsistent. We pretend to move forward, but in the end, we find ourselves going backwards. This is the image reflected by the park’s Ferris wheel. It is upside down.

Even the park’s location was not chosen at random. Banksy stated that the amusement park is a memory from his childhood. When he was a child, he used to go to the swimming pool in Weston-Super-Mare. He wants to share his childhood memories of this park with the public.
