1. Understanding the history and codes of Lyon's street art

Street art encompasses several practices: graffiti, stenciling, collage, mural painting, illustration, and installations in public spaces. The term therefore does not refer to a single style. A commissioned mural, lettering created on an authorized wall, and an ephemeral artwork have neither the same status nor the same lifespan.

In Lyon, large murals often tell the story of a neighborhood, while more spontaneous works engage with current events, color, or social issues. This coexistence gives the city a multifaceted art trail: some façades are maintained and updated, while others may disappear after just a few weeks.

The City of Lyon has selected 26 remarkable murals of local interest located across several districts. This selection offers a solid starting point for an initial visit, without claiming to cover every artwork visible on the streets.

  • Narrative murals: local history, architecture, and characters.
  • Graffiti and lettering: rhythm, typography, colors, and signatures.
  • Stencils and collages: more discreet formats, sometimes highly ephemeral.
  • Contemporary creations: evolving media, technologies, and messages.

2. Neighborhoods and painted walls to discover in Lyon

There is no single Lyon street art trail. The works are scattered, and their visibility changes depending on construction work, permits, and neighborhood projects. To plan your route, compare the city's list of painted walls with an up-to-date map.

Croix-Rousse: the most iconic starting point

Croix-Rousse blends the heritage of the silk workers, slopes, traboules, and painted façades. The Fresque des Canuts depicts neighborhood life in an evolving trompe-l’œil. The Tourist Office states that it covers 1,200 m², was created by CitéCréation, and is regularly updated to reflect changes in the neighborhood.

It is located at the corner of Boulevard des Canuts and Rue Denfert- Rochereau, in the 4the district. Metro line C serves the site at Hénon station. Allow some time to take in the details, then continue toward the slopes, where the formats and styles are more varied.

La Guillotière: a diverse and ever-changing scene

La Guillotière is best explored as a neighborhood to wander through rather than as a permanent museum. You may come across lettering, collages, paintings, and community projects, some of which are quickly replaced. Its appeal lies in the variety of formats and the encounters between businesses, residents, and artists.

For an enjoyable walk, stay in public spaces, visit during the day, and avoid photographing identifiable people without their permission. A recently updated map is especially useful in this area, as an artwork listed online may since have been painted over.

Confluence, Part-Dieu, and transforming districts

Contemporary districts such as Confluence and Part-Dieu offer an opportunity to compare urban art with recent architecture, repurposed wastelands, and temporary construction sites. Artworks are not always permanent, so check the map and local information before planning a specific detour.

Which neighborhood should you choose based on what you enjoy?

Croix-Rousse Large-scale trompe-l'œil murals and the heritage of Lyon's silk workers. Wear comfortable shoes for the slopes.
Guillotière Spontaneous works and diverse influences. Check that the map information is up to date.
City center and Presqu'île Historic painted walls and a cultural trail. Check the City's addresses before setting off.

3. Lyon's iconic street art

Some murals have become tourist landmarks, but they do not represent the full scope of Lyon's urban art scene. Their appeal also lies in their context: local history, architecture, neighborhood heritage, and interaction with passersby.

Fresque des Lyonnais and Bibliothèque de la Cité

In the 1st arrondissement, the Fresque des Lyonnais portrays notable figures connected to the city. The Bibliothèque de la Cité plays with the image of a building façade filled with books and regional writers. The City of Lyon guide provides directions and helps you extend your walk to other painted walls in the city center.

The murals of the Tony Garnier Urban Museum

In the États-Unis neighborhood, the Tony Garnier Urban Museum forms an open-air route dedicated to architecture and the idea of the “ideal city.” The City of Lyon lists 25 painted walls covering more than 200 m² each, several of which showcase the work of the Lyon-based architect. Events and visiting conditions should be checked on the Tony Garnier Urban Museum website.

For other works, use cautious wording in your posts: identified artist, dated work, and verified location. A signature or a photo found on social media is not always enough to attribute a mural with certainty.

4. Planning a street art route in Lyon

A good route combines well-known works with unexpected discoveries. Choose two or three nearby areas rather than trying to cover the entire city in a single day. Check the weather, elevation changes, and opening hours of the places you plan to visit before setting out.

Three route ideas to tailor to your plans
Route Theme To be checked
Croix-Rousse Fresque des Canuts, silk workers' heritage and slopes. Elevation changes, roadworks and street access.
City Center / Presqu’île Fresque des Lyonnais, Bibliothèque de la Cité and nearby walls. Exact addresses and any traffic restrictions.
United States / 7e-8e Tony Garnier Urban Museum and artwork in more recent neighborhoods. Museum schedule and travel time.

5. Guided tours, maps and apps

A guided tour provides the context that can sometimes be missing when viewing a façade: choice of subject, technique, commission, restoration, and neighborhood history. The Tourist Office offers guided tours and audio-guided routes; dates, prices, and locations vary by season. Check its page dedicated to Lyon's painted walls before booking.

For a self-guided walk, the community platform Street Art Cities – Lyon offers a map of artworks and locations. It is useful for finding recent creations, but its crowdsourced data may change: cross-check an address with a local source and follow the signage on site.

  • Before setting out: save a few locations and an offline option.
  • During the walk: allow extra time for detours and works that have disappeared.
  • After the tour: note the date, artist and source of each photograph.

6. Street art festivals and events

Festivals reveal another side of urban art: live performances, exhibitions, workshops, monumental murals and conversations with artists. The Peinture Fraîche Festival is regularly associated with the regional scene; its dates, venue and ticketing arrangements may change. Check the official program rather than an old announcement or an undated post.

Other projects are led by associations, cultural venues, housing providers or local authorities. To find an event near Lyon, check the date, exact location, access requirements and child-friendly activities before setting out.

7. Street art, public space and social connection

A work of art on the street is accessible to everyone, but that does not mean every wall is free to use. It is important to distinguish between a commissioned work, an authorized piece and an unauthorized creation. This distinction protects artists, property owners and residents, while avoiding presenting as permanent a work that may be removed.

During your visit, do not touch the surfaces, block entrances or reproduce a design on a wall without permission. Proper credit and a link to the image source help promote the artwork without removing it from its context.

8. Photographing and sharing Lyon's murals

To photograph a painted wall, first step back to preserve its proportions. Soft light in the morning or late afternoon reduces contrast. A wide-angle lens can help, but check the vertical lines and avoid distorting faces or architecture.

  • Frame the entire artwork before focusing on a detail or texture.
  • Ask permission from any recognisable people in the image.
  • Credit the artist, photographer and source when they are identified.
  • Avoid sharing the precise location of an artwork in a private or vulnerable space.

9. Drawing inspiration from street art for your interior décor

Love the colours or compositions you spotted in Lyon? At home, a decorative print can capture an urban feel without pretending to be an original mural. First, choose a suitable wall, then a palette that complements your furniture: graphic black and white, primary colours, concrete tones or neon accents.

To explore this inspiration further, discover our street art wall art collection, then compare the sizes and materials in our modern wall art collection. A more abstract design may suit a minimalist living room: our selection of abstract wall art retains the movement and colour without replicating an existing mural.

For styling ideas, also see our guide on incorporating urban art into a bedroom. In all cases, check the dimensions, finish, material and viewing distance before ordering.
